Getting to know your Topic

Reference sources--like dictionaries and subject encyclopedias, provide overviews of topics and descriptions of concepts and ideas. They can also provide definitions, statistics, and other details. You can use this type of source to help narrow your research topic, find data to support your thesis, and identify keywords and main ideas to use as search terms.

  • CREDO Reference: 798 online reference resources from numerous publishers. This reference resource can be searched by individual title, broad subject headings, cross-references, audio and images.
  • The Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures (Civilizations of Mexico and Central America): An extensive three-volume work, employing 300 international authors to compose 617 lengthy articles addressing biographies, general contextual essays, and specific topics. Entries offer information on religion, medicine, curing, and healing, and modern Mesoamerican cultures that span from central Mexico to present-day Costa Rica.
  • The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece and Rome: This is an accessible guide and a comprehensive overview of the major cultures of the classical Mediterranean world from the Bronze Age to the fifth century CE. It also covers science-related topics as well as scientists of ancient Greece and Rome.
