Introduction to PubMed

What is PubMed?

PubMed comprises more than 33 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books.  Citations may include links to full-text articles from PubMed Central or publisher websites in the fields of medical, nursing, dentistry, veterinary, and pre-clinical sciences.  PubMed is a free resource developed and maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) and is located at the the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

If using the main PubMed search box, PubMed may modify or add additional search terms to what you've typed in in order to optimize retrieval, also known as automatic term mapping.  It may add MeSH terms, British/American spellings, singular/plural word forms, and other synonyms.  View these changes in the Search Details.  You can also use advanced searching techniques to optimize the results yourself.
