Jewelry & Metals II: Starting Your Research

Jewelry & Metals II with Tanya Crane

This guide will help you complete your semester-long Paper Doll assignment.

Visual Research & Inspiration

Paper Doll Images

  • Kyle Hilton: an artist who makes paper dolls based on contemporary pop culture. Check out his website or his archived content on New York magazine.
  • Dover Paper Dolls: collectible and children's paper dolls from the Dover publishing company
  • Google Image or Shopping search for "paper dolls" (don't forget the quotes!)

Artsy

The website Artsy is a fantastic source of images of and information about contemporary art. Try searching and exploring these topics:

3-D Doll Sets

For this assignment, you might get inspired by looking at dolls/action figures and their accessories: try Barbie, Playmobil, Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesAmerican Girl, or one of your childhood favorites.

Jumbo Search

This search tool gives you access to the wealth of information available through the Tufts libraries: ebooks, scholarly journal articles, newspapers, magazines, print books, streaming video, and more. The volume of content can be overwhelming; here are tips for getting good, relevant results:

  • Vary your terms: Try several ways to describe what you're looking for (e.g., "paper dolls," "paper doll," "paper toys," "dolls," etc.)
  • Use quotation marks: A search for "paper dolls" will give you more relevant results if you put the words in quotes. This is because the words will be searched together as a phrase, and you won't get results with, for example, "paper" on page 4 and "dolls" on page 70.
  • Use the filters: There are several ways to refine your searches in the left-hand column of the results page. Try limiting by format (journal article, news article, books, etc.), publication date, or subject.
  • Be creative & tenacious: Jumbo Search gives you access to some amazing resources, but they can be difficult to find in its ocean of information. If your first search isn't successful, don't give up! Spend time experimenting with search terms, filters, and conceptual approaches. And remember, library staff is here to help.
