Economics Citation Guide

The Journal of Economic Literature style is the style of the American Economic Association and some professors prefer this style manual.

Citation Styles

Below are some of the more common documentation styles used at the undergraduate and graduate levels. APA and Chicago tend to be the most used in Economics. There is also the style of the Journal of Economic Literature.

Be sure to check with your professor to find out which style they prefer.  If they only want consistancy, use Chicago or Turabian.

What are Chicago and Turabian Styles?

Citation styles from the University of Chicago Press. Used in History and in other disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.  Designed for students writing term papers, Turabian omits the publication details included in The Chicago Manual of Style.  Note: If you can't find a citation example in the Turabian manual see Chicago.

Features: Uses footnotes. Page numbers are required for direct quotes.
