Data.gov. The purpose of Data.gov is to increase public access to high value, machine readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.

U.S. Census Bureau. Search for statistics on people, places, housing, economics, business, etc.  The Census Bureau gathers the statistics for all government agencies.

American Factfinder (Census Bureau)
Access to 2000 and 2010 decennial censuses, the American Community Survey.

County and City Data Books 1944 through 2000
From the University of Virginia this service provides the opportunity to create custom printouts and/or customized data subsets (subsets only available for 1988-2000).
