In the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, many citation styles are used in research and professional writing. Nearly all major journal and conference proceeding series specify their style. If you are not assigned a specific style to use, one option is to select a major publication in your field and then follow its style guidelines.
This guide provides references for major styles. Information on other styles can be found on journal publishers' own websites (usually under a link about authors' submissions) and in the output style reference sections of citation managers such as EndNote and RefWorks.
