What is a Literature Review?

A narrative paper collecting and discussing the important scholarship on a given topic.

A literature review should:

  • Introduce your topic
  • Identify key concepts and researchers on your topic
  • Synthesize the major ideas and arguments in the scholarly conversation
  • Identify critical gaps, disagreements, and overlooked perspectives in methodology and research
  • Suggest future directions for further study, i.e. your own potential research
