RefWorks

Before You Migrate to Another Citation Management Tools

Please note that the instruction for the latest version of RefWorks new_refworks_logoand the
legacy version of RefWorks refworks_legacy_logo are different.

Before migrating references please be aware that:

  • Folders in RefWorks cannot be moved along with your references. You will need to create folders in the new citation management tool that correspond to your folders in RefWorks if you want to preserve your folder structure.
     
  • File attachments will not transfer from RefWorks to the new citation management tool . You have to download file attachments manually to your computer and upload them onto the new citation management tool.   
     
  • The Personal Notes and User fields in RefWorks will not transfer to new citation management tool . You can copy and paste this information into another field manually.

Migrating to EndNote desktop

Latest version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account and select the references you want to migrate to EndNote.
  2. Then choose the Share option and then select Export References.
  3. Select the RIS Format option and select Export.
  4. Save the .ris file onto your computer.

Step 2: 

  1. Open an EndNote library. Then, go to File and select Import >>File...
  2. Under Import File, browse for and select the .ris exported from RefWorks. Under Import Option, select Reference Manager (RIS). Select Import.
  3. The references should now appear in your EndNote library.

Legacy version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account and select the references you want to migrate to EndNote.
  2. In the command bar on the upper left-side of the screen, select References >> Export
  3.  Under Export Format, select RefWorks Tagged Format.
  4. Select Export to Text File. A new window or tab will open displaying references in text format.
  5. From your web browser*, select File >> Save Page As...>> name and save the text file.

*If using Safari: select the "email to you"  option in the green pop-up  window option; a text file will then be sent to your email

Step 2:

  1. Open an EndNote library. Then, go to File and select Import >>File...
  2. Under Import File, browse for and select the .txt exported from RefWorks. Under Import Option, select Other Filters... and select RefWorks Import. Select Import.
  3. The references should now appear in your EndNote library.

Migrating to EndNote Online/EndNote Basic

Latest version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account and select the references you want to migrate to EndNote Online/EndNote Basic.
  2. Then choose the Share option and then select Export References.
  3. Select the RIS Format option and select Export.
  4. Save the .ris file onto your computer.

Step 2: 

  1. Log into your EndNote Online/EndNote Basic account. On the toolbar, go to Collect and select Import References.
  2. Under File, browse for and select the .ris exported from RefWorks. Under Import Option, select RefMan (RIS). Select a group in which to import the references and then select Import.
  3. The references should now appear in your account.

Legacy version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account. Go to the References pull-down menu, select Export.
  2. Select which references to include and then choose the Bibliographic Software option and click Export References
  3. The exported file will open in a web browser* window. Save the file to your computer. In your web browser, go to File and select Save Page As. You may rename the file, but be sure to but keep the txt extension.

*If using Safari: select the "email to you"  option in the green pop-up  window option; a text file will then be sent to your email

Step 2:

  1. Log into your EndNote Online/EndNote Basic account. On the toolbar, go to Collect and select Import References.
  2. Under File, browse for and select the .txt exported from RefWorks. Under Import Option, select RefMan (RIS)Select a group in which to import the references and then select Import.
  3. The references should now appear in your account.

Migrating to F1000 Workspace

Latest version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account and then select the references you want to migrate to F1000 Workspace.
  2. Then choose the Share option and then select Export References.
  3. Select the RIS Format option and select Export.
  4. Save the .ris file onto your computer.

Step 2: 

  1. Log into F1000 Workspace. The, select the My References tab. 
  2. Select Import References. When promoted select the Reference files: RIS, BIB, NBIB & EndNote XML option.
  3. Select the .ris file exported from RefWorks and select Open. Then select Import (nb: F1000 will try  to bring over PDFs).
  4. The references should now appear in F1000 Workspace.

Legacy-version of RefWorks:

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account. Go to the References pull-down menu, select Export.
  2. Select which references to include and then choose the Bibliographic Software option and click Export References

  1. Log into F1000 Workspace. The, select the My References tab. 
  2. Select Import References. When promoted select the Reference files: RIS, BIB, NBIB & EndNote XML option.
  3. Select the .txt file exported from RefWorks and select Open. Then select Import (nb: F1000 will try  to bring over PDFs).
  4. The references should now appear in F1000 Workspace.

Migrating to Mendeley

Latest version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account and then select the references you want to migrate to Mendeley.
  2. Then choose the Share option and then select Export References.
  3. Select the RIS Format option and select Export.
  4. Save the .ris file onto your computer.

Step 2: 

  1. In Mendeley desktop, go to File and select Add Files
  2. Select the .ris file exported from RefWorks and select Open.
  3. The references should now appear in Mendeley.

Legacy-version of RefWorks:

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account. Go to the References pull-down menu, select Export.
  2. Select which references to include and then choose the Bibliographic Software option and click Export References

  1. In Mendeley desktop, go to File and select Add Files
  2. Select the .txt file exported from RefWorks and select Open.
  3. The references should now appear in Mendeley.

Migrating to Zotero

Latest version of RefWorks

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account and then select the references you want to migrate to Zotero.
  2. Then choose the Share option and then select Export References.
  3. Select the RIS Format option and select Export.
  4. Save the .ris file onto your computer.

Step 2: 

  1. In Zotero, go to File and select Import.
  2. When prompted, click Next and then select the .ris file exported from RefWorks and select Import.
  3. Choose whether to place the references in a new and select Next. The references should now appear in Zotero.

Legacy-version of RefWorks:

Step 1: 

  1. Login to your RefWorks account. Go to the References pull-down menu, select Export.
  2. Select which references to include and then choose the Bibliographic Software option and click Export References

Step 2: 

  1. In Zotero, go to File and select Import.
  2. When prompted, click Next and then select the .txt file exported from RefWorks and select Import.
  3. Choose whether to place the references in a new  and select Next. The references should now appear in Zotero.
