Planning for data is particularly important for synthetic biology because this area of research involves a global chain of investigators who generate masses of data.  Moreover, this chain vacillates between an open-science data-sharing paradigm and proprietary research concerned with intellectual property.  Issues of confidentiality and dealing with the need to protect human subjects and endangered species also must be considered.  Careful planning is the best way to navigate this sometimes complex landscape.
