Searching

Jumbo Search

What it is: A portal for searching almost everything available through the Tufts Libraries. Think of it as google for Library resources.

Use it to: â€‹Search artist names and other key terms to find scholarly journal articles, magazine articles, exhibition reviews, streaming media, and more.

Art Source

What it is: A database that lets you search thousands of periodicals -- scholarly journals, news sources, and popular magazines -- related to art, architecture, and design.

Why it's useful: A good way to dive deeper into a topic, once you've done some background reading. Articles often represent current ideas and scholarly research that have not yet been published in books.

Search Tips

Words, not phrases: Use precise search terms, as opposed to phrases.

  • Good: domestic* AND feminis* AND critic*
  • Not so good:  what are feminist critiques of domesticity

Truncation: In the above example, searching "feminis*" will find all words with that root: feminism, feminist, feminists, etc.

Use quotes:

  • If you search Andrea Zittel without quotes, some of your results may be less relevant
  • If you search "Andrea Zittel" in quotes, you'll only get results where those two words appear together.

Use the tools: On a search results page, make use of the search refining tools in the left-hand column. .

Be tenacious: If your initial search terms don't yield many results, or the results you want, brainstorm and experiment with other related terms.
