Ed Tech in the Library: Tools & Techniques

When to Use

Consider making a module when:

  • Your learners are completely remote and asynchronous.
  • Your learners won't receive a formal instructional session from you.
  • Flipping the classroom. Learners can work through the module before going to class, providing a baseline understanding and ensuring that everyone is coming in with the same working knowledge. This also frees up class time for advanced concepts and/or assignments that deepen understanding.

Note: Modules don't need to be created specifically for use within a classroom. Consider creating them to add additional learning opportunities and sharing them on relevant libguides.

Best Practices

Please keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list and that best practices change over time as student populations change. This list will be updated as research suggests modifications to best practices.

  • Chunk the content within your tutorials, this makes it easier for viewers to jump to the content they are interested in.
  • Add interactive elements such as questions, videos, and hotspots to engage students with the content.
  • Check the configuration settings before sharing as they may need to be adjusted for use outside of Canvas.
  • Monitor the results and adjust your module according to ongoing use.
