No-cost course materials & Open Educational Resources (OER)

This guide provides resources for finding alternatives to pricey textbooks and locating open educational resources (OER)

Resources for finding materials

This page includes resources for finding no-cost material. It is divided into several sections based on the type of materials you can find in the resource:

  • Find free materials by discipline: resources in this box allow you to browse for open course material -- including textbooks, syllabi, journals, and more -- by a particular subject or discipline. This is a good place to start to get an overview of materials without being overwhelming.
  • Find open textbooks: resources in this box find open textbooks and generally do not include other materials like syllabi, lecture notes, videos, etc. in your search results (though books that you find may come with these related materials). This is a good place to start if you're looking specifically for a textbook.
  • Find textbooks, course materials, and more in one search: resources in this box allow you to search for a range of course materials--including textbooks, syllabi, lectures notes, videos, and more--in a single search. This is a good place to start if you're looking to get a big picture of what's available, or if you're working on an interdisciplinary topic that doesn't fit neatly into the categories above.
  • Find open scholarly books: resources in this box search for non-textbook books.
  • Course materials & syllabi: resources in this box offer syllabi and full courses to use & adapt.
