About S&Q Mode

Slow Motion and Time Lapse are awesome techniques to experiment with, and this camera makes it very easy to accomplish. Most often, in order to achieve a slow motion or time lapse, you have to do a combination of in-camera work and editing in post.

We talked about frame rate in relation to shutter speed earlier and how if you deviate the 2/1 frame rate to shutter speed ratio, your motion will either look jagged or blurry. Well, when you want to create a slow motion or time lapse sequence, you do want to change this ratio.

For instance, to get the slow motion effect, you'll want to increase the frame rate so more images are captured per second. From here, you can slow down the footage in a video editing software. You need to change the frame rate because when you slow down the footage in post, the motion will look strange with only 24 fps. When you slow down footage that has more frames (or more information), it looks smoother. The same goes for increasing the speed and shooting at a lower frame rate for Time Lapse.

Slow Motion

The first thing you'll need to do is switch your camera's mode from Movie to "S&Q" on the top dial. Then click Menu > Under the Camera 2 Icon > S&Q Settings. and you can choose your settings from here.

After you've pressed S&Q Settings, you want to make sure "Record Setting" is at 24fps (this is the frame rate the video will be played back in. Now, under "Frame Rate" you can choose a frame rate ranging from 30-120 fps for varying degrees of slow motion. Once selected, the camera will tell you how much slower this footage will be. For example, setting your frame rate to 120 fps makes it 5 times slower.

Keep in mind, recording a 30 second video at this frame rate will produce a 150 second or 2 minute and 30 second video in slow motion.

Now, under "Frame Rate" you can choose a frame rate ranging from 1-15 fps for varying degrees of fast motion. Once selected, the camera will tell you how much faster this footage will be. For example, setting your frame rate to 4fps makes it 6 times faster.

Therefore, recording a 5 minute video at this frame rate will produce a 50 second time lapse.
