Research Data Management @ Hirsh Health Sciences Library

Why should I manage my research data?

Managing your data enables you to....

  • Comply with funding mandates
  • Be more organized
  • Avoid loss of information
  • Collaborate better with your team
  • Do better research!

What will I get out of sharing my research data?

By sharing your data, you will...

  • Enhance the visibility of your research (leading to more impact)
  • Support the verification and replication of your results
  • Encourage collaboration
  • Avoid unnecessary duplication
  • Be better equipped to preserve it for the long term

How do I cite a dataset?

There is no one-size fits all way to cite datasets. However, you should include elements that will allow others to find the data.

DataCite recommends including the following information in your citation:

  • Creator
  • Publication year
  • Title
  • Publisher
  • Stable identifier
  • Version number and resource type, if available or applicable

How do I properly dispose of my research data?

Simply deleting files from your computer is not enough to permanently remove them! In order to ensure that your files are truly deleted, you can:

  • Do a "data wipe" using special software that permanently removes files
  • Use a Degausser - a machine that emits a strong magnetic field to disrupt the storage media (though this may make the media unusable afterwards)
  • Physically destroy the documents by: shredding, pulverizing, or incinerating (if you no longer need the device)
