Definitions

Transitional Justice:

Transitional justice refers to the set of judicial and non-judicial measures that have been implemented by different countries in order to redress the legacies of massive human rights abuses. These measures include criminal prosecutions, truth commissions, reparations programs, and various kinds of institutional reforms. (from ICTJ site)

Post-Conflict:

A situation of nominally terminated hostilities, often with continued political tension, social instability, economic disruption, heightened crime.

Truth (and Reconciliation) Commissions:

Bodies set up to investigate and document history of human rights violations; some make recommendations for reform. They may be created through national legislation or international agreement.

Reconciliation:

Complex, long-term process to put relationships and societies back together; wide variation in the details of definition. Reconciliation was not part of the early Truth Commissions.

Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law (requires Tufts ID) has comprehensive articles on "Transitional Justice in Post-Conflict Situations" and "Truth and Reconciliation Commissions" with in-depth definitions of relevant terms.
