The series of photographs and collages collected in this volume began at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It commenced as a chronicle of the natural space confined within the bounds of the observer’s home garden. The exploration originated as the unbiased witnessing of seasonal rhythms as they altered a rich microcosm made of plants, flowers, and trees.

Carolina Caycedo: from the Bottom of the River

Themes of social and environmental justice in the multimedia artworks of renowned Colombian artist Carolina Caycedo Carolina Caycedo's (born 1978) immense geographic photographs, lively artist's books, colorful hanging sculptures and other works are not merely art objects, but gateways into larger discussions about how we treat each other and the world around us. She confronts topics such as the privatization of rivers and other bodies of water, territorial rights of Indigenous groups, the use of violence by police and the environmental, economic and social impacts of dams on local communities. This book showcases Caycedo's process with lavish illustrations of her work, including stills from her video Apariciones / Apparitions (2018), selections from her book Serpent River Book (2017) and images of her celebrated Cosmotarrayas series.

'Dear Earth: Art and Hope in a Time of Crisis' is published on occasion of the exhibition of the same name at Hayward Gallery, London, 2023.Inspired by artist Otobong Nkanga's suggestion that "caring is a form of resistance", this pioneering book will highlight the ways in which artists are helping to reframe and deepen our psychological and spiritual responses to the climate crisis.Essays by Rachel Thomas, Maja Fowkes and Reuben Fowkes, and Rebecca Solnit explore work by the 14 featured international artists; the history of climate-concerned art; and the role art has to play in climate activism today. After a series of short essays on each of the featured artists, a 'tapestry' of texts - old and new - weaves together the voices of the artists in the exhibition with other practitioners from the worlds of literature and ecology.The book's unique take on the climate crisis is the connection between activism, care and hope, explored through the work of leading contemporary artists. As well as the text 'tapestry', mentioned above, we have been given licence to publish a new text by Greta Thunberg, based on her recent keynote speech delivered at the Southbank Centre in 2022.Book features and details:'Dear Earth' is entirely printed on recycled paper, using vegetable inks. The production of this title will be carbon offset and the book itself will not be shrink-wrapped for environmental reasons.

Emerging Ecologies

The exhibition and the accompanying publication will be the first comprehensive study of the history of environmental thinking in architecture at any major institution globally. During the 1960s, as Western notions of endless progress and growth gave way to concerns over industrial pollution, resource depletion, and ecological limits, attitudes toward the environment became social, political, and ideological. Published to accompany the first expansive study of the history of environmental thinking in architecture, Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism studies the role architects and designers have played in defining our understanding of "nature" and the "environment," specifically during the rise of environmental discourse. The richly illustrated publication presents architectural contributions-from Ian McHarg's ecosystem management approach to the radical architectures of the New Alchemists and Charles and Ray Eames's oceanographic work with the Kennedy administration-to explore the role designers played in both promoting ecological concerns and in outlining the very terms of this nascent field. Through an introductory essay by curator Carson Chan and brief texts on each of the featured projects, Emerging Ecologies documents the proximity between ecology, design, and statecraft.

Garden Futures: Designing with Nature

Gardens have always been places of leisure, pleasure, and production - they reflect identities, dreams, and visions. Deeply rooted in their culture, gardens have immense symbolic potential. The recent revival of horticulture has focused less on the garden as a romantic refuge than as a place where we imagine the future and develop solutions. Urban farms, vertical gardens, and other innovative projects in art, architecture, and urban planning demonstrate that the present return to the garden is no timid retreat, but a pioneering quest for a world in which social and ecological justice count for something. Garden Futures examines what gardens and their design reveal about our relationship to nature. In exploring the history of ideas behind the genesis of the modern garden, the book takes a close look at the present, goes in search of origins in the past, and builds bridges into the future. Stunning photographs illustrate ground-breaking gardens by such designers as Derek Jarman and Piet Oudolf while critical articles by well-known authors question conventional garden ideals. Humane Ecologies

A presentation of eight contemporary artists whose work considers environmental questions in terms of their social and political implications Humane Ecology: Eight Positions features a group of contemporary artists who consider the intertwined natural and social dimensions of environmental questions: Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Carolina Caycedo, Allison Janae Hamilton, Juan Antonio Olivares, Christine Howard Sandoval, Pallavi Sen, and Kandis Williams. These artists--through their work in sculpture, video, sound installation, and plantings--think in the relational terms implied by ecology, the study of how organisms relate to one another and their environment. They explore themes such as the extraction and exploitation of both places and people, kinships with the more-than-human world, and ancient traditions of relation to the land that take on new urgency and form. Against posthumanist tendencies to "decenter" the human, these artists center different humans, ones routinely excluded from dominant discourses of environmentalism. The publication presents entries on each artist in addition to scholarly essays on the exhibition concept, genealogies of land art, and settler colonial histories of the Berkshires. Hurricane Season

Artistic resilience in the face of increasing meteorological threats to the Caribbean Hurricanes and the devastation they bring have long been a part of life in the Caribbean, but with climate change these storms are getting more frequent and more violent. In the face of these life-threatening climate catastrophes, artists can show us how these climate changes relate to a lived, everyday reality, and how they intersect with our experience of family, community and home. Hurricane Season is a story about a home under threat, cycles of environmental and political violence, and repairing communities despite the potential for them to be destroyed again. It features contemporary art in a range of mediums by artists from across the archipelago and the diaspora, including works by Firelei Báez, Lionel Cruet, Teresita Fernández, Tamika Galanis and Deborah Jack. Let's Become Fungal!

There is a growing interest in fungi and mycelium as a material, the ever-branching connecting threads of the fungal world. The entanglements and how this rhizomatic network functions is not just a fascinating ecological system and material, but carries a profound usefulness as a metaphor for our potential new systems, ways of thinking and behaviors. Let's Become Fungal! takes its inspiration from the world of art and mycology and shares a range of innovative and Indigenous practices from Latin America and the Caribbean that are rooted in multispecies collaboration, symbiosis, alliances, non-monetary resource exchange, decentralization, bottom-up methods and mutual dependency-all in line with the behavior of the mycelium. Every chapter is phrased as a question. They do not lead to answers, but to twelve teachings addressing for instance collaboration, decoloniality, non-linearity, toxicity, mobilization, biomimicry, death, and being non-binary. Simultaneously it ventures deeper into the world of fungi. The teachings from the fungus may inspire artists, collectives, organizations, educators, policy-makers, designers, scientists, anthropologists, change-makers, curators, urbanists, activists, gardeners, community-leaders, farmers, and many others, to become more fungal in their ways of working and being.

Plastic Capitalism

An argument for the centrality of the visual culture of waste-as seen in works by international contemporary artists-to the study of our ecological condition.Ecological crisis has driven contemporary artists to engage with waste in its most non-biodegradable forms- plastics, e-waste, toxic waste, garbage hermetically sealed in landfills. In this provocative and original book, Amanda Boetzkes links the increasing visualization of waste in contemporary art to the rise of the global oil economy and the emergence of ecological thinking. Often, when art is analyzed in relation to the political, scientific, or ecological climate, it is considered merely illustrative. Boetzkes argues that art is constitutive of an ecological consciousness, not simply an extension of it. The visual culture of waste is central to the study of the ecological condition. Boetzkes examines a series of works by an international roster of celebrated artists, including Thomas Hirschhorn, Francis Al_x00FF_s, Song Dong, Tara Donovan, Agn s Varda, Gabriel Orozco, and Mel Chin, among others, mapping waste art from its modernist origins to the development of a new waste imaginary generated by contemporary artists. Boetzkes argues that these artists do not offer a predictable or facile critique of consumer culture. Bearing this in mind, she explores the ambivalent relationship between waste (both aestheticized and reviled) and a global economic regime that curbs energy expenditure while promoting profitable forms of resource consumption.

Spirit in the Land

Spirit in the Land, which accompanies the art exhibition of the same name, examines today's urgent ecological concerns from a fresh perspective. Through their artwork and writing, the artists show how cultural identity and traditions are deeply rooted in our relationship with the land, illustrate the restorative need to return to nature, and exemplify how biodiversity and cultural diversity are essential to our survival. The exhibition and catalogue center the voices of underrepresented artists, approaching ecological awareness and environmental, social, and racial justice from the perspectives of the marginalized communities most negatively affected by today's crises. Acting as environmental stewards, the artists reveal nature to be a repository of cultural memory, a place of sanctuary, a contested site of resistance, and a source of spiritual nourishment. As land and water provide a sense of place and community, the exhibition aims to reconnect people to the natural world, illustrating our interdependence with all life on Earth. Tsuchi
by
An examination of Japanese contemporary art through the lens of ecocriticism and environmental history Collectively referred to by the word tsuchi, earthy materials such as soil and clay are prolific in Japanese contemporary art. Highlighting works of photography, ceramics, and installation art, Bert Winther-Tamaki explores the many aesthetic manifestations of tsuchi and their connection to the country's turbulent environmental history, investigating how Japanese artists have continually sought a passionate and redemptive engagement with earth. In the seven decades following 1955, Japan has experienced severe environmental degradation as a result of natural disasters, industrial pollution, and nuclear irradiation. Artists have responded to these ongoing catastrophes through modes of "mudlarking" and "muckracking," utilizing raw elements from nature to establish deeper contact with the primal resources of their world and expose its unfettered contamination. Providing a comparative assessment of more than seventy works of art, this study reveals Japanese artists' engagement with a richly diverse repertoire of earthy materialities, elucidating their aesthetic properties, changing conditions, and cultural significance. By focusing on the role of tsuchi as a convergence point for a wide range of creative practices, this book offers a critical reassessment of contemporary art in Japan and its intrinsic relationship to the environment. Situating art within the context of ecology and urbanization, Tsuchi shows artists striving to explore and reprocess raw forms of earth beneath the corruptions of human activity.
