There are several excellent books and articles linked from the course Canvas page, under "Reading Lists." Many of the books are on reserve at the SMFA Library.
What it is: A portal for searching almost everything available through the Tufts Libraries. Think of it as google for Library resources.
Use it to: Search artist names and other key terms to find scholarly journal articles, magazine articles, exhibition reviews, streaming media, and more.
What it is: A database that lets you search thousands of periodicals -- scholarly journals, news sources, and popular magazines -- related to art, architecture, and design.
Why it's useful: A good way to dive deeper into a topic, once you've done some background reading. Articles often represent current ideas and scholarly research that have not yet been published in books.
Search Tips
Use quotes: Surrounding two or more search terms in quotes will search for those words together as a phrase, and thus return more precise results. Works well for artist names:
Words, not phrases: Use precise search terms, as opposed to phrases.
Be tenacious: If your initial search terms don't yield many results, or the results you want, brainstorm and experiment with other related terms. For the example above, you might try:
