Searching

Jumbo Search

What it is: A portal for searching almost everything available through the Tufts Libraries. Think of it as google for Library resources.

Use it to: Search artist names and other key terms to find scholarly journal articles, magazine articles, exhibition reviews, streaming media, and more.

Art Source

What it is: A database that lets you search thousands of periodicals -- scholarly journals, news sources, and popular magazines -- related to art, architecture, and design.

Why it's useful: A good way to dive deeper into a topic, once you've done some background reading. Articles often represent current ideas and scholarly research that have not yet been published in books.

Search Tips

Use quotes: Surrounding two or more search terms in quotes will search for those words together as a phrase, and thus return more precise results. Works well for artist names:

  • "Andi Sutton," "Lisa Gross," "Jennifer Rubell," etc.

Words, not phrases: Use precise search terms, as opposed to phrases.

  • Good: "art" AND "food" AND "contemporary" AND "animal rights"
  • Not so good:  "which contemporary artists use food in their work to explore the issue of animal rights?"

Be tenacious: If your initial search terms don't yield many results, or the results you want, brainstorm and experiment with other related terms. For the example above, you might try:

  • art AND food AND "animal rights"
  • art AND food AND "vegetarian"
  • art AND food AND "vegan"
  • art AND food AND "factory farm*"

Use the tools: On a search results page, make use of the search refining tools in the left-hand column.
