Notetaking in Zotero

  1. For PDFs attached to your Zotero references, you may use it to take notes by annotating highlighted text.
  2. On the far right, doubleclick on the PDF icon attached to a selected reference to open it from your Zotero Library
  3. Within the PDF you’re reading, click the icon icon with a capital A surrounded by a square outline at the top to highlight text, then select the text you want to highlight
  4. Select the note icon note pad iconto the far upper right of the screen in the vertical menu
  5. Select the plus sign next to “Item Notes” to create a new annotation
  6. Then select "Add Item Note from Annotations”
  7. Add your note to annotate the highlighted text; it automatically saves

8. When you’re done highlighting and annotating text, go back to your Zotero library and click on the  citation and all of your annotations will appear underneath it.

Using Feeds to Stay Updated on the Literature

If you have a favorite journal in your discipline, you may create a feed to bring in the latest article to stay up-to-date on the literature.

Copy the feed URL (rss or xml) for a Journal and paste it by going to File > New Library > “New Feed” > “From URL…”
