Art and Ecology
Against the Anthropocene by
A critique of the discourse on the Anthropocene and the creative alternatives to it to be found through the arts, sciences, and humanities.Addressing the current upswing of attention in the sciences, arts, and humanities to the new proposal that we are in a human-driven epoch called the Anthropocene, this book critically surveys that thesis and points to its limitations. It analyzes contemporary visual culture-popular science websites, remote sensing and SatNav imagery, eco-activist mobilizations, and experimental artistic projects-to consider how the term proposes more than merely a description of objective geological periodization. This book argues that the Anthropocene terminology works ideologically in support of a neoliberal financialization of nature, anthropocentric political economy, and endorsement of geoengineering as the preferred-but likely disastrous-method of approaching climate change. To democratize decisions about the world's near future, we urgently need to subject the Anthropocene thesis to critical scrutiny and develop creative alternatives in the present.

Carolina Caycedo: from the Bottom of the River by
Themes of social and environmental justice in the multimedia artworks of renowned Colombian artist Carolina Caycedo Carolina Caycedo's (born 1978) immense geographic photographs, lively artist's books, colorful hanging sculptures and other works are not merely art objects, but gateways into larger discussions about how we treat each other and the world around us. She confronts topics such as the privatization of rivers and other bodies of water, territorial rights of Indigenous groups, the use of violence by police and the environmental, economic and social impacts of dams on local communities. This book showcases Caycedo's process with lavish illustrations of her work, including stills from her video Apariciones / Apparitions (2018), selections from her book Serpent River Book (2017) and images of her celebrated Cosmotarrayas series.

Contemporary artists probe the impact of human intervention on the environment Just as artists of the 19th and 20th centuries participated in forging an American natural history as explorers, cataloguers, collectors, and early environmentalists, contemporary artists continue to incorporate and comment on the natural world in their art. Motivated by the inexorable rise of urban-industrial development and the subsequent deterioration of our planet, artists confront the vulnerability of our environment and the effects of global climate change to illustrate the continued relevance of ecology and nature conservation to contemporary artistic practice. In Fragile Earth: The Naturalist Impulse in Contemporary Art, leading artists Jennifer Angus, Mark Dion, Courtney Mattison, and James Prosek make natural elements their medium conceptually and literally, from prints created with eel bodies, to ceramic sculpture mimicking coral bleaching, cabinets filled with colorful plastic collected from oceans and rivers, and walls covered with shockingly beautiful, preserved insects. Plastic Capitalism by
An argument for the centrality of the visual culture of waste-as seen in works by international contemporary artists-to the study of our ecological condition.Ecological crisis has driven contemporary artists to engage with waste in its most non-biodegradable forms- plastics, e-waste, toxic waste, garbage hermetically sealed in landfills. In this provocative and original book, Amanda Boetzkes links the increasing visualization of waste in contemporary art to the rise of the global oil economy and the emergence of ecological thinking. Often, when art is analyzed in relation to the political, scientific, or ecological climate, it is considered merely illustrative. Boetzkes argues that art is constitutive of an ecological consciousness, not simply an extension of it. The visual culture of waste is central to the study of the ecological condition. Boetzkes examines a series of works by an international roster of celebrated artists, including Thomas Hirschhorn, Francis Al_x00FF_s, Song Dong, Tara Donovan, Agn s Varda, Gabriel Orozco, and Mel Chin, among others, mapping waste art from its modernist origins to the development of a new waste imaginary generated by contemporary artists. Boetzkes argues that these artists do not offer a predictable or facile critique of consumer culture. Bearing this in mind, she explores the ambivalent relationship between waste (both aestheticized and reviled) and a global economic regime that curbs energy expenditure while promoting profitable forms of resource consumption.
