Bloomberg: Basics

Keyboard Basics

Many keys automatically do something, but you must hit the <GO> (Enter) key to execute other commands.  To see the Windows Start menu and other open programs, hover over the bottom of the left screen and the Taskbar will appear.

  • <ENTER/GO> - to log on to the Bloomberg terminal. Use the Fletcher log in or create your own by clicking create new login; also use to log off. Or type OFF <GO>.
  • <ESCAPE> - return home.
  • <HELP> - press once to display the online Help and description of how to use the current function. Press twcie to connect with live chat with a Bloomberg rep 24/7.<MENU> - Go up one level, much like how an iPod works. At the home page it brings up a basic menu.
  • <GO> is equivalent to the 'Enter' key on a standard keyboard and should follow every function/command to activate the page.
  • Page Back and Page FWD to scroll forward or back within a screen that contains multiple pages.

Common Commands

ANR <GO>:  Analysts' recomendations and ratings.

BBT <GO>:  Bloomberg Bondtrader monitors bid and offer prices for bills, notes, bonds, and interest rates swaps.

BETA <GO>: Historical Beta calculations.

BI <GO>: Bloomberg Industry Overviews and Dashboards.

BLAW <GO>:  Bloomberg law portal.

BPS <G>: Bloomberg guidance and help sheets.

BU <GO>:  Bloomberg University for training resources.

CACT <GO>:  corporate actions calendar.

CBQ <GO>: Country quotes, an overview of facts, figures, and markets by country.

DERV <G>: Derivatives menu page

DES <GO>: Description page for an equity.

ECO <GO>: Reports on the economy.

EMKT <GO>: Emerging markets

EQS <GO>: Equities search.

ESG <GO>: Environmental, Social and Governance metrics

FA <GO>: Financial history of companies or indices.

FSCV <GO>: FX derivatives menu.

MA <GO>: Mergers and acquisitions.

MSG <GO>:  Message system function; send internal Bloomberg emails or to outside email addresses.

MSGA <GO>: Send emails with attachments.

N <GO>:  Main news page.

NSE <GO>: News and social media search engine

OIL <GO>:  Crude oil prices.

RES <GO>: Search for research reports by company or industry.

RV <GO>: Peer group relative value analysis.

TOP <GO>: Today's top headlines.

WEI <GO>:  World equity indices.

Sector Keys

The yellow keys along the top of the keyboard are used to enter market sectors to correctly identify securities:

GOVT - government securities (US treasury and non-US)

CORP - corporate debt

MTGE - mortgage securities

M-Mkt - money market, commercial paper

MUNI - municipal debt

PFD - preferred shares

EQUITY - common shares

COMDTY - commodity markets

INDEX - indices

CURNCY - currency markets
