How to Read Case Citations

Legal Citation Abbreviations

The table below lists a few of the more common types of case citations that you will encounter in your research.
Complete legal citations give the volume, source, then page number, for example (100 U.S. 124) equals Volume 100 of U.S. Reports page 124. Always look for the abbreviations in the center of the citation to determine what source it is, using the table below.
