Technical reports and related documents often are categorized as "grey literature" because they are not collected, cataloged, or distributed in the same manner as are journals or monographs. Yet they offer extensive and essential knowledge on health-related matters. Much of this literature is published by government agencies and NGOs.

Index of technical reports of U.S. and international government agencies. The full-text link in the database does not go to the full-text of the report but many reports are available by searching the BLC WorldCat catalog, government websites, or Google.
A high percentage of patents filings address chemical substances. Some patent indexes enable searching by chemical structures or ID as well as by patent classification numbers for various types of substances.
